This course provides individuals with the fundamental principles and practices of infection prevention and control in various healthcare settings. It equips healthcare workers with the knowledge and skills required to reduce the risk of infections spreading to patients, staff, and visitors.

Participants will learn about standard and transmission-based precautions, the chain of infection and how to break it, identifying and responding to infection outbreaks, and implementing safe work practices to prevent the spread of infections. The course also covers the legal and ethical responsibilities of healthcare workers in relation to infection prevention and control.

This unit offers practical instruction on handwashing techniques, donning and doffing PPE using correct techniques and sequence, cleaning and disinfection, emphasising the ease of cross-contamination. Participants will practice safely handling and disposal of sharps, infectious and cytotoxic waste, and gain an understanding of the health risks associated with mishandling these materials.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 7 Hours
Online with face-to-face assessment Face to Face contact time of at least 2 Hours

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration skills
  • Language, literacy and numeracy skills to read and interpret policy, procedural and legislative documents.
  • Oral and written communication skills to clarify/follow instructions and complete report documentation
  • Protective slip resistant footwear/safety shoes must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions and assessment.

Online study options:  The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and practical assessment.

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Practical task demonstrations:

  • Manage exposure to body fluids
  • Manage exposure to a sharp, blood and a needlestick injury
  • Document risk and incident to supervisor

Documentation:

  • Risk Assessment
  • Incident Report

Theory assessment: A written exam consisting of multiple-choice and short-answer questions.
